Nursing is a career that is in great demand, makes a difference in peoples’ lives 24 hours a day/7 days a week, and offers opportunities in multiple settings with individuals, families, and communities. The nursing program at NAU offers the Associate of Science degree in Nursing. The motivated student is able to complete the program in seven (7) quarters. The associates degree in nursing program produces competent and caring professional nurses prepared to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam. (Completion of the program does not insure student eligibility to take the licensure exam; potential students are responsible for meeting the eligibility requirements for licensure determined by the Nurse Practice Act in the state in which they anticipate licensure.)
All general education and prerequisite courses may be taken prior to admission to the nursing program. Enrollment in the nursing program is selective. Acceptance is based on available resources and selection of students with the highest probability of successfully completing the program. Meeting the minimum prerequisites does not ensure acceptance. Educational Goals for the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing:-
- Continuously monitor student outcomes to identify and implement opportunities for improvement.
- Develop the student's ability to utilize critical thinking and problem solving skills in clinical and professional practice.
- Demonstrate how to practice according to established standards of care and within the ethical and legal framework of the profession.
- Encourage the student to participate in ongoing education and professional organizations and to exhibit professional, motivated, positive and self-directed behavior in professional activities.
- Offer curricula that stresses strategies on how the student can function collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health care team.
- Provide the basic knowledge and skills necessary to begin a successful career in nursingand the beginning skills and knowledge necessary for the student to assume the role of caregiver teacher, counselor, client advocate and member of the profession.
- Provide the student the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate practice theories and concepts for nursing, sciences, and humanities when providing comprehensive nursing care in a variety of settings.
