Careers in Software Engineering

Computer Software Engineers in the fields of Application and Systems Software are occupations that are projected to be among the fastest-growing between 2004 and 2014, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook 2006-07. The computer science jobs in these areas are projected to grow by more than 46.1%. This increase in computer science jobs provides opportunities for individuals with an associate's degree in Software Engineering.

Examples of entry-level careers in Software Engineering :-

  1. Applications Programmer
Writes programs to handle a specific job, such as a program to track inventory within an organization. An Applications Programmer may also revise existing packaged software or customize generic application called middleware.

  2. Computer Programmer
Writes programs according to the specifications determined primarily by computer software engineers and systems analysts. After the design process is complete, it is the job of the programmer to convert that design into a logical series of instructions that the computer can follow. The programmer then codes these instructions using various types of programming language. Many programmers update, repair, modify, and expand existing programs.

  3. Systems Programmer
Writes software programming to maintain and control computer systems software, such as operating systems, networked systems, and database systems. Systems Programmers make changes in the sets of instructions that determine how the network, workstations, and central processing unit of the system handle the various jobs they have been given, and how they communicate with peripheral equipment such as terminals, printers, and disk drives. Because of their knowledge of the entire computer system, systems programmers often help applications programmers to determine the source of problems that may occur with their programs.

Other computer science careers related to Software Engineering may include :-

  1. Database Analyst
Coordinates changes to computer databases, tests and implements the database applying knowledge of database management systems. May plan, coordinate, and implement security measures to safeguard computer databases.

  2. Software Developer
Develops, creates, and modifies general computer applications software or specialized utility programs. Analyzes user needs and develops software solutions. Designs software or customizes software with the aim of optimizing operational efficiency.

  3. Web Site Developer
Designs the structure of a Web site to fit client specifications using knowledge of HTML. Also requires knowledge of site design, architecture, navigation methodologies, and search engine optimization.
